Rockland — As the 18-game regular season dwindles to a precious few games, every win the Oceanside and Mount View girls basketball teams can deposit in the bank helps the Mariners and Mustangs keep their heads just below or above the water that is the Class B North playoff bubble.

Thus, it was certain that the high school opponents would step on the court on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 19 for a matinee affair motivated to pull out a win.

That was especially true, perhaps, for the hosts, who had lost to the Mustangs in an earlier game this season.

However, Mount View used a series of runs — and staved off a second-half rally by Oceanside — to forge to a 54-49 victory.

Of course, it helped that the visitors again got a tremendous offensive effort from their little secret, a freshman who is slowly but surely becoming a known commodity.

Hannah Coolen, a 5-foot 3-inch athletic dynamo, who has the ability to drill long-range shots or bolt to the hoop, absorb body contact from taller opponents, and still score. And did we mention she is pretty accurate from the free-throw line as well.

Coolen scored 17 points in the first half and made 7-of-8 free throws in the pivotal fourth quarter to keep the Mustangs one step ahead of the charging Mariners.

Oceanside led 12-10 after one quarter, but the Mustangs galloped ahead 27-22 at halftime and 41-33 after three stanzas.

For Mount View, Coolen finished with 24 points, while Shala Davis, also a dynamic all-around player, tallied 13. Alex Fountain added nine, all on 3-pointers, and Sage Cassidy four; Lydia Bryant and Leah Bradstreet, two; and Sophia King, one.

Fountain connected on three 3-pointers, all key in the third quarter to push the visitors ahead, while Coolen made two treys in the first half.

Coolen also contributed nine rebounds and three assists, while Davis had 13 rebounds and two blocked shots; Fountain, three rebounds and three assists; Cassidy, five rebounds and three assists; and Bradstreet, four rebounds.

Mount View finished 18-of-29 (62 percent) from three-throw line, including 12-of-18 (67 percent) in the fourth stanza, including 7-of-8 (88 percent) from Coolen.

The Mustangs used an 11-0 run to end the first half and increased their lead in the third before the Mariners rallied.

"This was a nice team win for us," said Mustang coach Mark Cooper. "Our first road win of the season. We got contributions from everyone tonight. We were more aggressive taking the ball to the rim. Our bench was key for us, very positive, very supportive and gave us good minutes."

For Oceanside, Grace Woodman, another tremendously talented young player, led the way with 16 points, including three 3-pointers. Raechel Joyce added 11 points; Molly Gould, seven; Chloe Jones, five; Hope Butler and Abby Veilleux, four; and Sara Dorr, two. Joyce and Veilleux also netted treys for the Mariners.

Oceanside made 11-of-21 foul shots (52 percent). Woodman also chipped in five rebounds, four steals and two assists, while Gould had four rebounds; Butler, two rebounds; Veilleux, four rebounds; Jones, three rebounds; Kalli Grover, four rebounds; Joyce, four rebounds and two steals; and Dorr, two rebounds.

The Mariners sit in much better postseason position, at this point, but after it started 0-5, the Mustangs have split their next six, including a 41-38 win over Oceanside on Jan. 8 in Thorndike.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Oceanside ( 4-9, 25.4938 points) is ninth, while Mount View (3-8, 10.0617 points) 14th. Hermon (10-0, 57.4074 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.
