MPA classification changes affect Waldo County schools

By Staff | Jul 12, 2017

Augusta — The Maine Principals’ Association held its biannual reclassification meeting in late-April at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, which, ultimately, created changes for Maine high schools — including Searsport and Mount View.

For the Vikings, the basketball teams will remain in Class C — though they will cross the border from Class C South to Class C North, which would make 21 teams in each region.

Thus, if either Viking hoop team should qualify for the regional playoffs, they will compete at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, where previously, in Class C South, the squads played tournament games at the Augusta Civic Center.

Searsport will compete against schools such as Central of Corinth, Houlton, Dexter, Piscataquis of Guilford and Bucksport, the latter of which is the Vikings' most local rival a mere 13 miles away.

For the Mustangs, all will remain status quo, with the exception of outdoor track and field, which will move from Class B to Class C.

Mount View’s indoor track team (Mustangs recently have competed as individuals and competed with neighboring Belfast) will remain in Class B.

Islesboro Central School and Belfast Area High School will remain in their respective classes and regions for all sports.
