Montville — A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the home of Rebecca Bryant at 1046 Halldale Road the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 26.

Speaking Wednesday morning, Dec. 27, while awaiting a call from the state Fire Marshal’s Office, Montville Fire Chief John York said, “There was so much damage we really couldn’t tell (the cause); we couldn’t put people in the building.” That determination is pending the fire marshal’s inspection, he said.

York said five of Bryant’s dogs escaped the blaze, “but we lost some puppies.”

Bryant has a place to stay, the chief — a neighbor — said, adding that he and others are helping her with her insurance claim and addressing other needs. “She’s a local girl; she’ll be taken care of,” he said.

The two-story residence already was engulfed in flames when the Montville Fire Department arrived yesterday.

Karen York, the department's public information officer, said Tuesday noon at the scene that the house was a total loss.

"We have called for an excavator to come in and pull it down so we can get this fire out," she said. The excavator arrived that afternoon and leveled what remained of the still-burning structure.

The fire was reported to Waldo County Communications Center just after 10 a.m. Dec. 26. "It was fully involved when the call came in to dispatch," Karen York said. "We immediately called for mutual aid."

Many neighboring departments responded, including Freedom, Liberty, Morrill, Searsmont and Thorndike, as well as Liberty Ambulance. Brooks and Unity departments were covering on standby, she said. Subfreezing temperatures iced the roadway and generally hampered efforts to extinguish the fire.

Freedom Fire Auxiliary also responded to provide lunch to firefighters, she said.
