Thorndike — Fans who hoped for a tense, down-to-the-wire high school basketball game were not disappointed on Tuesday, Jan. 7 as the Mount View and Belfast boys renewed their hardwood rivalry.

And while the Lions cut their 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit to a single point with less than a minute to play, the Mustangs netted just enough free throws down the stretch to hold on and pick up a hard-fought, 62-59 win.

The Mustangs had four players in double-figures, including Sean Raven, who netted 16 points and had a collection of late made free throws to help the hosts hold off the surging Lions.

Declan Knowlton also tossed in 14 points for the ‘Stangs, while Elijah Allen added 11; Garrett Smith, 10; Draedyn Furrow, eight; and Tyler Russell, three.

Chris Kelley poured in a game-high 27 points to lead the Lions, while Jason Bartlett added 13; LaDerrick Roberts, eight; Drew Abelon and Pat McConnell, four; Marco Melotti, two; and Tommy Walker, one.

The Mustangs finished 14-of-30 (47 percent) from the foul line, while the Lions were 13-of-22 (59 percent).

The game featured 10 lead changes, six of which came in a back-and-forth second quarter. The stanza also had two ties, the first of which came off a trey from Kelley to knot the score 19-19.

Raven hit a free throw to give the ‘Stangs a 20-19 lead, but treys from Kelley — then Russell — and then Bartlett saw the scoreboard tilt back and forth and back to Belfast at 25-23.

Knowlton then hit a jumper to tie the score before Furrow gave the ‘Stangs the lead back with a foul shot, but the Lions scored the final four points of the stanza — the last of which was a fadeaway from the elbow from Kelley — as Belfast took a three-point lead into the halftime locker room.

In the third, the Mustangs ended the quarter on a 12-2 run and took the lead for good.

Trailing 37-32, Smith hit a pair of foul shots followed by a hoop from Allen, and offensive putback from Raven and a steal and score from Furrow to give the hosts a 40-37 lead. Bartlett responded with a basket, but Smith closed the stanza with four straight points to give Mount View a 44-39 edge.

Despite the fact Roberts left the game early in the fourth with a leg injury suffered off a rebound attempt, Belfast played their way back into the game after Furrow's foul shot gave Mount View a 54-44 lead midway through the quarter.

The Mustangs held a 58-55 lead with 34.7 to play when the Lions missed a pair of foul shots, but Belfast was able to convert an offensive putback by Kelley to bring it within 58-57.

Mount View was able to go 4-of-8 from the foul line over the final 30 seconds — and Grassi secured a pivotal offensive rebound after Knowlton missed the back end of a two-shot foul with three seconds left — to help the Mustangs corral the win.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Mount View (4-4, 18.7182 points) is eighth, while Belfast (4-3, 2.8395 points) is 15th. (Caribou (8-0, 40.9405 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs.
