Lions, Mustangs continue to work on game, aim for wins

The Mount View golf teams has had a tough campaign, but the Mustangs continue to work to improve their game, while the Lions of Belfast suffered their first course defeats of the campaign.

The Lions lost to Oceanside of Rockland 6-3 on Monday, Sept. 16, while Friday the 13th — a day blamed for bad luck among the superstitious — came to fruition as Belfast also lost to Leavitt of Turner 7.5-1.5.

The Mustangs have not won a match, and that trend continued as the squad fell to Waterville and Oceanside of Rockland 9-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 11 and Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B playoffs are around the corner for squads, as notable postseason tourney dates include: Friday, Sept. 20, first-round of league playoffs: No. 7 at No. 2; No. 6 at No. 3; and No. 4 at No. 5; Monday, Sept. 23, second-round of league playoffs: No. 4-No. 5 winner at No. 1; No. 6-No. 3 winner versus No. 7-No. 2 winner at site of highest seed, as winners advance to the league shootout; Thursday, Sept. 26, KVAC Class B shootout at 2 p.m. at Rockland Golf Club — winners of North and South second-round matches play for title; Tuesday, Oct. 1, KVAC state qualifier at 10 a.m. at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro — Class B teams and girls will play Arrowhead Course; Saturday, Oct. 5, Maine Principals' Association Class B team championships at Natanis at 10 a.m. on Tomahawk Course; and Saturday, Oct. 12, MPA individual championships at 10 a.m. at Natanis — Class B boys on Tomahawk Course and girls on Arrowhead Course.

Projected league playoff seeds for Class B North Division — with one match still to be played — are: No. 1 Oceanside (7-2, 59 points), No. 2 Waterville (6-3, 55 points), No. 3 Belfast (6-2, 48.5 points), No. 4 Lawrence of Fairfield (4-5, 45.5 points), No. 5 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield (4-5, 29 points), No. 6 Nokomis of Newport (2-6, 16 points) and No. 7 Mount View of Thorndike (0-8, 8 points).

The following is a recap of recent regular-season matches:

Oceanside 6, Belfast 3

At Rockland Golf Club Sept. 16, the Mariners handed the Lions their second straight loss. Oceanside finished with a four-golfer stroke total of 191 to 198 for Belfast.

The individual Belfast results, with Lion golfers listed first, were: James Ritter (53) lost to Austin Chilles (46), 2-down; Thomas Parker (44) beat Carter Fogarty (49), 2+1; Tommy Walker (46) beat Darik Johnson (46), 4+3; Bobby Banks (55) lost to Mason Curtis (50), 2-down; Zach Sanderson (62) beat Colin Landry (68), 4+3; and Hagen Chase (67) lost to Nate Fogarty (57), 3+2.

Parker shot 44 to earn medalist honors.

Leavitt 7.5, Belfast 1.5

At Northport Golf Club Sept. 13, the Hornets stung the Lions. Leavitt finished with a four-golfer stroke total of 170 to 185 for Belfast.

The individual Belfast results, with Lion golfers listed first, were: Tommy Parker (45) lost to Ruby Haylock (43), 4+1; James Ritter (35) beat Billy Visconti (44), 5+4; Tommy Walker tied Morghan Dutil (43); Zach Sanderson (52) lost to Eli Lind (47), 5+4; Casey Balicki (61) lost to Rebekah Davis (53), 4+2; and Hagen Chase (66) lost to Aidan Lind (47).

Ritter earned medalist honors with 35.

Waterville 9, Mount View 0

At Waterville Country Club Sept. 11, the Purple Panthers clawed through the Mustangs. Waterville finished with a four-golfer stroke total of 197 to 242 for Mount View.

The individual Mount View results, with Mustang golfers listed first, were: Miles Littlefield (63) lost to Brandon Bearce (45); John Clifford (56) lost to Charlie Haberstock (51); Josh Campbell (63) lost to Owen Evans (46); Lucas Ford (64) lost to Peter Sack (58); Shawn VonOesen (60) lost to David Ramgren (55); and Dylan Lobley (66) lost to Alex Spaulding (56).

Bearce earned medalist honors with 45.

Oceanside 9, Mount View 0

At Country View Golf Club Sept. 10, the Mariners made quick work of the Mustangs. Oceanside finished with a four-golfer stroke total of 205 to 249 for Mount View.

The individual Mount View results, with Mustang golfers listed first, were: John Clifford (62) lost to Austin Chilles (43), 5+3; Miles Littlefield (61) lost to Darik Johnson (48), 4+2; Josh Campbell (62) lost to Mason Curtis (57), 2-down; Lucas Ford (64) lost to Nate Fogarty (57), 3+1; Shawn VonOesen (68) lost to Colin Landry (60), 4+2; and Caleb Raven lost to Rhys Jones (62), 4+3.

Chilles shot 43 to earn medalist honors.
