Mount View 4, Nokomis 2

At Thorndike Aug. 31, the Mustangs galloped away from the Warriors.

Hannah Coolen, Ari Allen, Gabby Allen and Kaylan Anderson scored for the hosts in the victory. Shala Davis had two assists, while Sage Pound and Ari Allen added an assist for the Mustangs.

Meagan Whitten and Samantha Wilson tallied goals for Nokomis.

Zoe Mayhew stopped eight shots for the Mustangs in net, while Celia Smith made 17 saves in goal for the Warriors.

Mount View finished with a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

“It was a really outstanding effort and nice start to the season,” said Mount View coach David Page. “We definitely controlled the game throughout. We just had a tough time getting our shots on target, need to tighten up our defense and work on midfield organization. But even though it wasn't always pretty, a win's a win, and a really positive way to kick off the season. We'll take it.”

Brewer 7, Belfast 1

At Brewer Sept. 1, the Lions stayed close with the host Witches in the first half and trailed 3-1 at the break. However, Brewer was not to be denied and kicked to the victory.

At Doyle Field, Maria Low (5 goals, assist), Alli Cottrell (goal) and Abby Stroup (goal) paced the hosts. Junne Robertson-McIntire scored for Belfast.

Libby Hewes had seven saves on eight shots in goal for Brewer, while Shera Hilt made eight stops on 15 shots in the Lion net.

Brewer held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks and scored on two of them.

"Game was well-played on both sides of the ball with a tighter match than the score shows," said first-year Lion coach Brian Beaulieu. "Brewer won the battle of set plays with four of their seven goals coming on set plays — corner kicks and indirect kicks — and an additional goal from a [penalty kick]. Play from the field remained fairly even.

"Considering the strength of the Brewer team and their success last year. I was very encouraged with how our Belfast girls played. Their passing, communication and patience on the field was excellent. They are showing a confidence and cohesiveness that is very promising. I have never seen a group of girls fight so hard. There was no quit in them. Even the referees made some very positive comments after the game. They represented the school and our area admirably."
