Thorndike — The best way to describe the Camden Hills and Mount View girls basketball contest on Wednesday, Feb. 10 is to compare it to a car heater in the dreary dead of winter.

One starts the car, leaves it to run, waits for it to warm and returns once it has had time to "wake up" and "get the juices flowing."

The same can be said for the Windjammers and Mustangs, as the opponents needed time to warm up and get into a rhythm, although, ultimately, the hoop heat Mount View gave off was warmer than the visitors in a 41-30 high school court victory.

The squads also met on the hardwood just over a week ago, on Jan. 29 in Rockport, where the Mustangs edged the Windjammers 40-39. To read about that game, click here.

Thus far in this pandemic-altered and -shortened season, Mount View is 4-4 and Camden Hills 0-6.

"We did a great job last night defensively," said Windjammer coach Kim Kuhn. "Our goal was to slow down Coolan who is a very good ball player and we did a great job only allowing her only two field goals. We are getting a lot of shots up every game but we are not capitalizing on making a good percentage of them."

On Wednesday, Mount View led 10-9 after one quarter, 21-11 at halftime and 30-21 after three stanzas.

Hannah Coolen (12 points, 7 rebounds) led the hosts, while Syd Vogel added 11 points; Kricket Thompson (8 points, 7 rebounds); Hannah Ferreira, six points; and Madison Roux, three points. Vogel sank two 3-pointers, while Roux and Ferreira hit one for the Mustangs.

Mattie Luce (11 points, 4 steals, 4 rebounds) led Camden Hills, as Ella Powers (9 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds), Molly Shook (4 points, 5 rebounds, 4 blocks), Tessa Whitley (2 points, 5 steals, 2 assists), Molly Hixon and Amelia Johnson (2 points), and Bailey Curtis (point) keyed the visitors. The Windjammers did not make a trey.

"Luce played a good game last night," said Kuhn. "She helped us on both ends of the floor. Shook and Anna Jordan took turns playing [Thompson] and they both did a great job on her defensively trying to keep her out of the paint."

The Mustangs netted 10-of-16 foul shots (62 percent) and Windjammers 7-of-17 (41 percent).

The first field goal did not fall until two minutes into the contest, as Coolen got one of her two shots to fall — after an earlier free throw — to put the hosts ahead 3-0.

The Windjammers' first shot did not hit the bottom of the net until a minute later, when Shook connected on a 15-foot jumper, to pull her squad within one.

After the teams made a few free throws to slow the pace, the "heaters" finally started to come up to strength, as Thompson got her lone field goal in the first quarter to fall to push Mount View's advantage to 7-3 with 2:15 to play.

Powers answered for the visitors with an elbow jumper to drop the Mustang lead to two points.

Roux countered Powers' field goal with a trey from the wing, as the Mount View advantage again increased.

In the final 2:15 of the opening stanza, the opponents combined for nine points to close the quarter.

Mount View's "heater" was on full blast to start the second stanza, as the hosts used an 11-0 run from four Coolen free throws, Vogel's basket, Ferreira's jumper, and Thompson's bucket to extend the advantage to 20-9 with 2:33 to play in the half.

Luce made two free throws to stop the run, and halt a Windjammer scoreless streak which spanned almost five-and-a-half minutes.

Mount View's lead stayed mostly intact through the third quarter, but the fourth stanza saw the Windjammers sail within striking distance.

Luce hit a shot to open the final eight minutes, and 1-of-2 free throws, to pull the visitors within six points, 30-24.

After the foes exchanged baskets, and charity-stripe points, Amelia Johnson made her only basket of the game to bring the visitors within five points, 34-29, with 2:46 to play into a Camden Hills' timeout.

After the stoppage, Vogel netted two treys within a minute to push the Mustang advantage back to double-digits, 40-29, with a minute remaining to sink the Windjammers.

"Overall we are improving each game," said Kuhn. "Even though we have not won a game yet this season, I am seeing improvement in every game. We are turning the ball over less, playing extremely hard, and getting good team balanced scoring. We just need to have a game where we are all clicking offensively. We are getting close and learning to play together.

"We are really missing Ella Graffam's offense. She has not played since the Medomak Valley game due to a back injury."
