Mustangs, Lions continue to battle tough court foes to end of campaign

While the Belfast and Mount View high school basketball teams will fall short of the Class B North playoffs this season, all four continued to play out the regular-season string on Tuesday, Feb. 5 in contests against Waterville and Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

By day’s end, the Mustang lost to the Huskies — the girls 30-24 in Thorndike and the boys 71-37 at Pittsfield — while the Lion teams were downed by Waterville as the girls lost 54-32 at Waterville and the boys 79-65 at Belfast.

The Lions and Mustangs will end the regular season against one another on Thursday, Feb. 7, with the girls at Belfast and the boys at Thorndike.

The following is a recap of reported results:

Girls

Waterville 54, Belfast 32

At Waterville Feb. 5, the Purple Panthers remained unbeaten with a victory over the winless Lions. Waterville led 11-6, 30-12 and 45-23 at the quarter breaks.

Grace Fitzjurls led Belfast with 11 points, while Sydni Moores added seven; Madison Farris, five; Lillie Mitchell, four; Hailee Lindelof and Karagen Stone, two; and Junne Robertson-McIntire, one.

Maddy Martin paced Waterville with 19 points, while Abby Saucier added 12; Kali Thompson, nine; Paige St. Pierre, Hannah Leclair and Gabby Maines, three; Kiera Gilman and Sadie Works, two; and Lindsay Given, one.

The Lions were 10-of-24 (42 percent) from the foul line, while the Purple Panthers were 13-of-24 (54 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (0-17, no points) is 16th, while Mount Desert Island (15-2, 127.5926 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Maine Central Institute 30, Mount View 24

At Thorndike Feb. 5, the Huskies — despite being held scoreless by the Mustangs in the second quarter — held on for a six-point win. MCI led 14-2, 14-10 and 19-17 at the quarter breaks.

Alex Fountain scored nine points for Mount View, while Shala Davis added six; Hannah Coolen, four; Sage Cassidy, three; and Sophia King, two.

Sydney Farrar tossed in 11 points for MCI, while Sara Linkletter added eight; Natalie Sites, four; Jillian Frost, three; and Christa Carr and Leah Bussell, two.

The Huskies were 3-of-4 (75 percent) from the foul line, while the Mustangs did not attempt a foul shot.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Mount View (4-13, 27.7778 points) is 13th, while Mount Desert Island (15-2, 127.5926 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Boys

Waterville 79, Belfast 65

At Belfast Feb. 5, the Purple Panthers jumped to an early lead and coasted past the Lions. Waterville led 27-15, 44-37 and 68-43 at the quarter breaks.

Jason Bartlett poured in 25 points to lead the Lions, while Luke Lightner added 12; Wilder Magruder, 10; Chris Kelley, nine; Daktota Payson, five; Tanner Veilleux, two; and Ethan Hall and Grady Doolan, one.

David Barre led the Purple Panthers with 22 points, while Jack Thompson added 14; Jack Lloyd, 12; Ben Danner, nine; Liam Von Oesen, four; and Noah Von Oesen and Taylor Bielecki, two.

Belfast was 7-of-10 (70 percent) from the foul line, while Waterville was 8-of-12 (67 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (2-15, 5.8642 points) is 15th, while Hermon (17-0, 174.0123 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.
