Mustangs sweep Lions, Vikings pillage Mariners in first game

Kneeland tallies five goals for SDHS in season-opening win

Waldo County’s most storied pitch rivalries were renewed between Mount View and Belfast on Tuesday, Sept. 10, while the Searsport boys also were in action on the field, which resulted in wins for the Mustangs and Vikings.

The Mustang boys booted past the Lions 9-0 in Belfast, while the Mustang girls edged the Lions in a thrilling, 2-1, overtime triumph in Thorndike. The Viking boys also posted a 10-1 home win over Deer Isle-Stonington.

The following is a recap of reported results:

Girls soccer

Mount View 2, Belfast 1 (OT)

At Thorndike Sept. 10, the Mustangs got the game-winning score off a penalty kick from Gabby Ravin with 2:44 remaining in the first overtime as the hosts trotted to victory. The longstanding rivals were tied 1-1 at the end of the first half and at the end of regulation.

Ravin also assisted on a first-half goal by Gabby Allen for Mount View, while Sarah Fuller scored for Belfast, off an assist from Junne Robertson-McIntire.

The game was knotted in overtime when Sage Pound dribbled into the right-hand side of the box and was fouled near the endline, which set up the game-winning penalty kick by Ravin.

Zoe Mayhew made one save on four shots in goal for the Mustangs, while Casey Snow made 15 saves on 33 shots for the Lions.

Boys soccer

Mount View 9, Belfast 0

At Belfast Sept. 10, the Mustangs galloped out to an early lead and blanked the host Lions. Mount View led 5-0 at halftime.

Leading the Mount View offense were Draedyn Furrow (2 goals), Atlas Hubbard (2 goals), Noah Jacobs (2 goals), Elijah Allen (goal) and Tyler Russell (goal).

Mount View held a 37-16 edge in shots and 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Ricky Nelson made seven saves in goal for the ‘Stangs and Koal Joy 20 saves for the Lions.

Searsport 10, Deer Isle-Stonington 1

At Searsport Sept. 10, the Vikings scored at will against the visiting Mariners en route to their first win of the season. Searsport led 3-0 at halftime.

Leading the Viking offense were Gabe Kneeland (5 goals, assist), Daegan Moody (2 goals), Josh Wright (goal, 2 assists), Sean Paige (goal), Gage Ellis (goal), Chase Brassbridge (assist) and Colby Snow (3 assists).

Trevor Bubar scored the lone goal for the Mariners.

Searsport held a 27-7 edge in shots and 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Colby Snow and Ryan Ordelt combined to make three saves in net for the Vikings, while Joe Snow made 17 saves for the Mariners.
