Corinth — The rumble was steady, like thunder as it rolls over the plains, only thunder was not the cause.

A band of Mustangs descended with the hope of an upset over the Red Devils of Central, and no amount of pitch forks stopped the onslaught and domination of the "invaders."

With an upset on its mind, the No. 7 Mount View girls soccer team achieved its goal with a 5-1 Class C North high school quarterfinal playoff victory over No. 2 Central on Tuesday, Oct. 29 to advance to the semifinals.

Central's season concluded at 11-4.

The Mustangs (9-6-1) saddle up and hit the road again, as Mount View's mile log continues to grow, as the team will travel to play at No. 3 Houlton (13-2) on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Houlton defeated No. 6 Calais 8-1 in the quarterfinals.

Mount View also beat No. 10 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 6-1 in the prelims, thus, in two postseason games, the Mustangs of Thorndike have outscored opponents 11-2.

On Tuesday, the Mustangs led 2-0 at halftime.

Sage Pound (2 goals) led the Mount View offense, while Hannah Coolen, Gabby Allen and Gabby Ravin also scored in the win. Pound, Davin, Coolen, Abbi Downer and Arianna Allen tallied assists.

Rylee Speed scored Centrals' lone goal.

Zoe Mayhew stopped six shots in net for the Mustangs, while Alyssa Day stopped 13 for the Red Devils.

Mount View held a 27-9 advantage in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks.

"I think we started a little slow, but once we got into [the game] we played really well," said Mustang coach David Page. "I was really impressed with the girls. They played hard, won 50-50 balls and started hitting the wings and doing the things we talked about, and I think that was a big factor in today's result."

"We came out strong and we weren't really sure what we were up against, because we hadn't really played any Class C teams this year," said Pound. "We came out strong, played our game and I think we did a good job."

"We did this last year, when we came out strong against Ellsworth in the first 20 minutes, and that's what we talked about all season long, coming out and getting fast starts, and letting teams know this game is over," said Page. "I think that's what we did today, and once we got those [second and third] goals [we put the game away.]"

Mount View came out of the gate with its mane on fire, as the offense peppered Day with shots, while the defense kept the Red Devils' offense at bay.

With 22:04 to play in the first half, Central turned the ball over in the Mustangs' end of the field along the right sideline. Ravin brought the ball up and crossed the ball into the box, which flew directly behind Gabby Allen, but found Pound all alone, as she scored the game's first goal.

Two minutes later, Mount View struck again. Arianna Allen gained control in the box and put a shot on net, which was blocked away by Day, but right to Pound who scored on a wide-open look.

"[Scoring the first two goals] was definitely a pump-up," said Pound. "It's pretty exciting and it definitely set us on our way to score five goals."

The second half was more of the same, as the visitors kept the intensity up.

At the 28:41-mark, Coolen gained control of a loose ball outside the box, side-stepped a Central defender, and put a right-footer over Day and in for the goal to increase the lead.

Just a minute-and-a-half later, Mount View was up to its old tricks again. Pound found Gabby Allen in the box, Allen did an abrupt 180-degree turn to lose a defender and finished an open look for the Mustangs' fourth goal.

With 21 minutes to play, Central's Javona Philbrick collided with Mount View's Taylor Hodgdon in the box, which awarded the Red Devils a penalty kick.

Speed lined up for the kick, but her shot went wide left of the post.

Mount View scored its final goal of the contest with 17 minutes to play, when a Mustang cross found Ravin, who finished the play to put the visitors ahead 5-0.

Central's lone goal came with under a minute to play, when the Red Devils were awarded their second penalty kick. Speed's shot went off the fingertips of Mayhew and into the back of the net.

This is the first year in Class C for Mount View, but the Mustangs played a predominantly Class B regular-season slate, something that only helps in postseason crunch time.

"I think playing [a Class B schedule] really does prepare us for the playoffs better than playing some of the smaller schools," said Page. "What better preparation is there than Waterville, John Bapst and Winslow. Those are some teams that really get you ready for the postseason.

"We are playing teams we don't know [right now]. We just come into every game and play our game."
