In November, the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance will offer six new workshops in towns across Maine including Bangor, Kennebunkport, Portland and Rockland. The workshop topics include fiction, nonfiction, and memoir.

Getting Ready for Winter Work, a two-part workshop with Susan Hand Shetterly, will take place Saturdays, Nov. 2 and 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St. Cost is $150, $85 for MWPA members; deadline to apply for Dibner Fellowship is Friday, Oct. 25.

This workshop will provide exercises and discussion on aspects of character development and setting. Attendees will work with what they know and what they can imagine, material that will help give them what they need to sustain them through their winter writing work in either fiction or nonfiction.

In the first session, attendees will create new work. They will stretch their boundaries and give their imaginations room to play. In the second session, they will concentrate on what they have discovered from the first session, what they need to polish and expand, and how they might put their story pieces together. Attendees will be asked to bring three pictures or photographs and two objects from home; the instructor will supply other writing prompts.

Shetterly is the author of two collections of narrative essays, five children’s books and numerous articles and essays in magazines such as Audubon, Down East, Yankee, National Wildlife, Sanctuary and Habitat. She was a contributing writing to Maine Times for 15 years. She has received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts; two Individual Artist Fellowship grants from the Maine Arts Commission; and she has been a resident at Yaddo. Her book “Settled in the Wild” won the 2011 Maine Literary Award for Nonfiction.
