Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce announces Steve Ryan of Belfast has been selected as the next executive director.

Ryan has been active in the Midcoast Region of Maine in a variety of roles. He is currently chairman of Belfast's Planning Board and sits on the board of Maine Celtic Celebration, the award-winning cultural festival held annually in Belfast. He served as the city’s representative on the Gateway 1 transportation planning project which garnered national recognition, and was chairman of the board for Friends of Midcoast Maine for several years.

He leaves a director position in the health care field with Beacon Health, the population health division of Eastern Maine Health Systems in Brewer.

Ryan replaces outgoing Executive Director Michaelene Achorn, who has served for a year and a half, as she is pursuing other ambitions with her husband in Florida. Achorn leaves the chamber in a strong position, with both publications and events increasingly popular with local businesses, and with tourists from around Maine and across the country.

With a busy fall and holiday season fast approaching, board President Drew Strout said he is relieved to welcome new leadership.

“The chamber’s golf tournament on Sept. 22, the annual awards gala on Nov. 10 and our award-winning annual publication ‘Belfast: the Bay and Beyond’ are all going to benefit from the time Steve and Michaelene will have together, resulting in a smooth transition for our chamber,” he said.

Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce is a partnership of more than 380 business owners and professionals working together to build a better community through affiliation, collaboration and long-lasting relationships. The mission of Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce is to promote business and economic growth in the Belfast area.
