No demo derby, lawn mower races at Union fairgrounds

It was hoped events could be held in September, but safety concerns, guidelines, ultimately, made that impossible

Union — While organizers of the Union Fair and Maine Wild Blueberry Festival were able to deliver an appetizer for those looking for normalcy in the form of the event’s “gigantic yard sale,” due to changing COVID-19 safety guidelines from the state, they were unable to serve the main course and dessert.

After announcing in July the possibility of hosting the gigantic yard sale, demolition derby and Thunder Valley Lawn Mower Race — eying mid-September for all three events — it was announced on Wednesday, Aug. 26 on the event’s Facebook page the latter two events would not be possible.

The yard sale was held on Saturday, Sept. 12, while organizers eyed Saturday, Sept. 19 for the demolition derby and Saturday, Sept. 26 for the lawn mower races.

But, after consideration and thought about how difficult it would be to manage large crowds (as opposed to a yard sale where patrons can be let in as others depart), the decision was made to cancel the remaining two events.

“Our trustees feel it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to keep spectators within the current CDC and State of Maine safety guideline with respect to outdoor events,” said the group via a Facebook post. “In addition, the safety of our guests, volunteers and safety crews in this difficult time was a deciding factor.”

Currently, Maine prohibits outdoor gatherings of more than 100 people.
