Belfast — Police charged a Northport man for allegedly defrauding a customer after he was paid to do some roofing work but failed to do so.

Stephen E. Boyle, 46, was arrested and charged Aug. 7 with home repair fraud. Detective Sgt. Gerry Lincoln of Belfast Police Department said Boyle was contacted by the victim in April and entered into a contract to complete $6,300 in roofing work.

Boyle was paid half of that amount – $3,150 – upfront as a down payment. However, after receiving the payment, he allegedly failed to complete any of the work, Lincoln said. The victim attempted to contact Boyle but Boyle wouldn’t return phone calls or text messages.

The issue continued until this month when the victim contacted police regarding the alleged fraud. Police investigated and determined that Boyle did not take any steps to fulfill the terms of his contract, Lincoln said.

Boyle is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 22.
