Northport — Ruth Gelsinger, Artistic Director, and the Board of Directors of the Northport Music Theater have announced the theater’s acceptance as a public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code. The summer musical theater was founded by John and Ruth Gelsinger in 2007 and features contemporary American musical theater and a day camps program that teaches kids musical theater at all grade levels.

The theater is located on Route 1 and seats 128 people. It was an industrial machinery repair shop in the 1960s and ‘70s and later was used as a furniture repair shop. The stage is a modified thrust design and the 1940s vintage and refurbished seats were originally from a theater in Amherst, Mass.

NMT’s first production, “The Musical of Musicals! (The Musical),” was presented in June 2007. Other shows since then include “Six Women with Brain Death or Expiring Minds Want to Know,” “Fame Takes a Holiday,” “Golf! The Musical,” “Closer Than Ever,” “Five Course Love,” “The Big Bang,” “The Bikinis,” “Sister Robert Anne’s Cabaret Class” and “Funny Girl.” Camp shows presented since 2008 by students include “Jungle Book,” “101 Dalmatians,” “Attack of the Killer Grasshoppers,” “Mulan Junior,” “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” “Rent,” “Into the Woods” and “Fairy Tale Dreams,” among others.

The Board of Directors comprises seven members: Annie Watson of Lincolnville, president of the board; John and Ruth Gelsinger of Northport; Blair and Beanie Einstein of Bayside; Nancy Hauswald of Belfast; and Richard Tourigny of Stockton Springs.

Congrats! Ruth, John, Annie, Beanie, Blair (the parking long guy!) and all, for this significant move.  I am grateful for the Musical Theater genre that you have brought into our area.  Bravo! in your new incarnation.
