Notorious plays for Flying Shoes

Apr 19, 2014
Notorious will perform a Camden Library Coffeehouse Thursday, May 1, and play the Belfast Flying Shoes contra dance series Friday, May 2.

Belfast — Everyone is invited to experience how many ways contra duo Notorious can metamorphosize 64 beats at the Belfast Flying Shoes contra dance Friday, May 2, at the American Legion Post No. 43, 143 Church St. Chrissy Fowler will be calling dances, with sound provided by Eric Weest Johnson.

Lauded as sparkling and exhilarating, Notorious musicians Eden MacAdam-Somer and Larry Unger return to the series and for those who have not heard them yet, it won't take four beats to realize that they are not just any ordinary folk band. Sweet vocals and virtuosic fiddling coupled with driving rhythm and snappy guitar solos make for a thrilling musical experience in genres that span many continents.

Belfast’s Fowler will again cheerfully call dances left, right and in-between. Gifted at building community through dance and movement, she skillfully leads all dancers in this spirited traditional New England event.

The evening will begin 6:30 p.m. with a community dance led by Fowler with music by the All-Comers Band, led by Phyllis Buchanan and Jennifer Armstrong. Fun and simple dances will be taught, and both beginner and experienced dancers are encouraged to brush up on and learn new skills. All musicians are welcome to sit in. The contra dance will run from 8 to about 11 p.m.

Admission for the community dance is $2 for adults, $1 for children. For the contra, the price is $10 for those older than 20; $7 age 13 to 20, as well as adult All-Comers; and $4 for children. As always, there is a dollar discount for every box fan brought in for the windows. For more information, call Fowler at 338-0979 or visit
