Thorndike — The Mount View seventh- and eighth-grade boys travel basketball team has seen tremendous success on the hardwood of late, including two tournament victories in as many weeks.

The Mustangs hosted the eighth annual Mustang March Madness Tournament Friday through Sunday, March 9-11 at Mount View High School and finished 5-0 over the three-day event, as they bested Lincoln Academy in the championship game.

Lincoln Academy sent two teams to participate, while Thomaston, Oceanside, Lawrence, Pittsfield and Boothbay also took part in the boys tourney.

The tournament was pool play and Mount View finished 3-0 in its pool and bested Lawrence in the semifinals before it bested Lincoln Academy to claim the title.

There also was a corresponding girls tournament at Mount View Middle School, which saw Pittsfield emerge victorious over squads from Dexter, Bangor, Belfast, Orono, Boothbay and two teams from Five Towns (Camden) to claim the title.

That tournament win for the Mount View boys, who also have a talented young female player, came following its victory in the 39th annual Basketball Classic boys junior high basketball tournament at the Boothbay Region YMCA. In that tourney, the Mustangs finshed 4-0 in the double-elimination tournament and bested Lisbon in the title game.

Teams from Boothbay, Winslow, Norridgewock, Oceanside and two teams from Lincoln Academy also participated in the tournament.

There was also a corresponding girls tournament — the 44th Rotary International/YMCA Girls Junior High Basketball Tournament — which saw teams from Boothbay, Five Town, Tidal Wave, Medomak, Lincoln Academy, Belfast and St. George participate. Lincoln Academy emerged victorious in the girls tourney.

Team members for the Mount View boys, coached by Monica and Wally Furrow, include Draedyn Furrow, Noah Hurd, Declan Knowlton, Hannah Coolen, Tyler Russell, Hunter Penney, Caleb Brown and Jeremiah Ponder.

“Most of the kids have been playing together for five years, which build trust between them,” said coach Monica Furrow. “They’re definitely a lot of fun to watch and a privilege to coach. We feel fortunate to be part of their basketball careers.”

Coach Furrow said, “When our offense isn’t working, our defense makes up for it.”

“We’re strong underneath the hoop,” said Furrow.

In the Mustang March Madness tourney, Hurd was named to the all-tourney team, while Knowlton was named most valuable player of the tournament.

In the Boothbay tourney, Knowlton and Coolen were named to the all-tourney team, while Furrow was named tournament MVP.
