Palermo rejects sale of town-owned parcel

Palermo — Residents approved all but one of 33 articles on the annual town meeting warrant in Palermo March 9.

According to Town Clerk Mary Andrews, the only item rejected by voters was the sale of a town-owned 51-acre property on Turner Ridge Road.

One area of the budget increased significantly: paving and repaving. That line jumped by $73,000 from the prior year when $200,000 was expended. According to the warrant, $48,000 of that money will come from the Local Road Assistance Program.

Few other changes — increases or decreases — were made to the municipal budget requests, though the Town Office account increased to $37,000, compared to slightly more than $30,000 expended in 2018.

Itemized expenses for Palermo Volunteer Fire Department increased slightly as well, to $19,660 from $11,788 expended in 2018. Municipal wages, which include health insurance, increased to $96,900 compared to the $80,694 expended of the $90,990 appropriated in 2018.

During elections the day before, S. Blake Brown was elected to a three-year term as assessor with 55 votes; Road Commissioner Scott Childs retained his one-year position, also with 55 votes; Miriam Keller was chosen as the town’s general assistance administrator for three years with 56 votes; and Pamela Swift got 57 votes for a three-year term as selectman, replacing Selectman Cheryl York, who did not seek re-election.
