Phone scam claims to raise money for BAHS basketball team

Sep 14, 2018

A Belfast business owner has been the target of a phone scam circulating within the community recently.

According to an email from the business owner, a caller claiming to be affiliated with the Belfast Area High School basketball team called and asked for donations.

The caller reportedly asked the business owner to donate, "like last year."

However, Terry Kenniston, Belfast Area High School assistant principal and athletic director said, "We were contacted by local businesses yesterday — and we confirmed this is not sanctioned by the school."

Belfast Police have been notified of the scam. They warn residents not give out personal information, such as credit card numbers, over the phone and to contact the Maine Attorney General's office at 626-8849 if they suspect a scam.
