Pirates, Red Devils pillage Vikings for pair of late 2018 wins

The Searsport basketball teams closed the 2018 calendar year with a pair of road games, and came up short against tough opponents in high school court affairs against Piscataquis of Guilford and Central of Corinth.

The Viking boys dropped an 85-60 decision to the host Pirates, while the Viking girls fell in a hard-fought, low-scoring 39-33 contest against the Red Devils.

The Viking girls game was played at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, in conjunction with the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, which had a full slate of games which feature teams throughout the region.

The following is a recap of both contests:

Boys

Piscataquis 85, Searsport 60

At Guilford Dec. 27, the Pirates connected on nine 3-pointers and surged past the Vikings. PCHS led 28-13, 46-28 and 69-44 at the quarter breaks.

Colby Snow led Searsport with 23 points, while Josh Wright and Charlie Spinney added 10; Aaron Wiley, six; Isaiah Runci, four; George Dakin, three; and Toby Kroening and Gabe Kneeland, two.

Caleb Willis led PCHS with 21 points, while Eben Cooley and Kolby Gilbert each added 18; Caleb Crocker, 10; Caleb Bailey, five; Matt Robinson and Wayne Haley, four; Colby Chadwick, three; and Christian Easler, two.

The Vikings were 6-of-12 (50 percent) from the foul line, while the Pirates were 5-of-7 (71 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Searsport (3-3, 3.8966 points) is 11th, while Houlton (5-1, 14.1358 points) is first in the 20-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Girls

Central 39, Searsport 33

At the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor Dec. 27, the Red Devils held the Vikings at bay and emerged with a six-point win. Central led 8-3, 19-14 and 30-24 at the quarter breaks.

Alison Shaw paced Central with 12 points, while Madison Speed added eight; Emilee Cohen, seven; Alyse Campbell, six; Alexis Reardon and Rachel Smith, two; and Gabby Poulin and Cassidy Hanson, one.

Makenzie Alley scored nine points for Searsport, while Mikaela Alley and Ashten Wells added eight; Abby Stemp and Casey Snow, three; and Morgan Ireland, two.

The Vikings finished 7-of-15 (47 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Red Devils were 13-of-24 (54 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Searsport (4-2, 7.0988 points) is ninth, while Dexter (5-0, 13.7037 points) is first in the 20-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.
