Belfast — The Playhouse Actors present “Cookin’ With Gus,” written by Jim Brochu and directed by Mary Weaver, Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m.; and Sundays at 3 p.m., Dec. 1 through 10, at The Playhouse, 107 Church St.

In 1985, Gussie Richardson (Sasha Kutsy), a talented syndicated food columnist and cookbook author who has been working for years to build her career, has just been offered her own television cooking show — if she can create a smashing demo tape. Her talent agent Bernie Luskin (Jeffrey Miller) is on hand to film it.

Helped by her next-door neighbor Carmen Rosita Juanita Magda de Rostopovich (Leslie Stein) — and not helped by her partner of 18 years, Walter Richardson (James Tatgenhorst) — Gussie’s taping is going to be completed if only she can be helped to overcome her phobia about speaking in public … or on camera. Walter tries to “help” with some hypnosis, and the mess left in the kitchen threatens to end it all, even their long love.

Seating is limited seating, so calling 338-5777 for reservations is encouraged. The door opens 15 minutes before curtain. The pay-at-the-door tickets are $10, $5 for students.

The show is produced with special funding from the Maine Community Foundation, Maine Theater Fund, Maine Expansion Arts Fund and donations to CLAP! Inc., a tax-exempt 501(C)3 nonprofit organization.
