Plenty of Tuesday games, but only Belfast boys cement victory

Searsport, Mount View, Isleboro squads fall short in second-half games

The Belfast boys basketball team cemented its seventh win of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 14, while other Waldo County high school court teams came up empty in quests for victories with the second half of the season ongoing.

The Lion boys posted a 71-47 win over Waterville, while the Mount View boys also emerged victorious (see separate story) with a 73-60 win over Oceanside of Rockland. The Islesboro boys also fell 59-31 to Vinalhaven.

On the girls side, the Lions fell 72-26 to the Purple Panthers, the Mustangs were downed 52-31 by the Mariners and Searsport lost 66-25 to Penobscot Valley of Howland.

Boys

Belfast 71, Waterville 47

At Waterville Jan. 14, the Lions pulled away from the Purple Panthers with a 26-11 third-quarter run and surged to a midseason win. Belfast led 16-12, 34-25 and 60-36 at the quarter breaks.

Jason Bartlett netted 22 points for the Lions, while Tanner Veilleux added 11; Patrick McConnell and Chris Kelley, 10; Chase Sanders and Tommy Walker, six; Drew Abelon, three; Ethan Hall, two; and Steve Friel, one.

Jelani Parker scored 10 points for the Purple Panthers, while Liam VonOesen added eight; Taylor Bielecki, seven; Spencer Minihan, Wayne Williams and Trafton Gilbert, six; and Adam Sirois and Jonas Hutchingson, two.

Belfast netted 6-of-13 (46 percent) from the free-throw line, while Waterville was 9-of-24 (37 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (7-4, 14.6914 points) is 14th, while Caribou (10-0, 66.1728 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Vinalhaven 59, Islesboro 31

At Vinalhaven Jan. 14, the Vikings prevailed over the Eagles in an island showdown. Vinalhaven led 11-10, 27-18 and 51-23 at the quarter breaks.

Hunter Ames paced Vinalhaven with 13 points, while Joe Hopkins added 10; Tim Farrelly, nine; Robbie Swears, six; Alec Radley and Mark Augusto, four; Trey Goodrich, three; and Colby Beverage, Kyle Grant, Lincoln Dennison, Von Jones and Connor Lazaro, two.

Charlie Jagger keyed Islesboro with 17 points, while Dylan Jagger added five; Alex Watson, four; Blake Zlotkowski, three; and Shamus Dove, one.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class D South, Islesboro (1-9, 0.6250 points) is 10th, while Forest Hills of Jackman (10-0, 53.7037 points) is first in the 11-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.

Girls

Oceanside 52, Mount View 31

At Rockland Jan. 14, the Mariners outscored the Mustangs 17-7 in the third quarter and slowly pulled away for the win. Oceanside, which stayed in front the entire game, led 11-6, 29-17 and 46-24 at the quarter breaks.

Grace Woodman pumped in 20 points — including four treys — to pace the Mariners, while Molly Gould and Audrey Mackie added 11; Abby Waterman, eight; and Emily Sykes, two.

Hannah Coolen led the Mustangs with 15 points, while Syd Vogel added seven; Sophia King, four; Lydia Bryant, three; and Kricket Thompson, two.

The Mariners were 5-of-9 (56 percent) from the foul line, while the Mustangs were 6-of-10 (60 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Mount View (1-11, 2.3457 points) is 15th, while Hermon (11-1, 74.9383 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Waterville 72, Belfast 26

At Belfast Jan. 14, the Purple Panthers held the Lions without a field goal in the second and fourth stanza and prowled to victory. Waterville led 23-5, 43-6 and 56-25 at the quarter breaks.

Halle Tripp scored eight points for Belfast, while Grace Fitzjurls added six; Lillie Mitchell, five; Kiara Doolan, four; Hailee Lindelof, two; and Sydni Moores, one.

Sadie Garling led Waterville with 17 points, while Maddy Martin tallied 10; Abby Saucier, nine; Sadie Works, eight; Gabby Maines and Jayda Murray, six; Coltan McRae and Lindsay Given, four; Jaclyn Gray and Paige St. Pierre, three; and Kali Thompson, two.

The Lions were 4-of-7 (57 percent) from the foul line, while the Purple Panthers were 7-of-17 (41 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (1-9, 1.1728 points) is 17th, while Hermon (11-1, 74.9383 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Penobscot Valley 66, Searsport 25

At Searsport Jan. 14, the Howlers went on a 21-5 second-quarter run and prevailed over the Vikings. Penobscot Valley led 15-7, 36-12 and 53-18 at the quarter breaks.

Makenzie Alley scored 18 points for Searsport, while Emma Spiegel added four and Abby Stemp three.

Lexi Ireland poured in 28 points for Penobscot Valley, while Laney Harding added 13; Emily St. Cyr, six; Leine McKechnie, five; Rebecca Carson and Emilee Ireland, four; and Julia Durost, Kaya Loring and Holly Loring, two.

The Vikings finished 7-of-10 (70 percent) from the foul line, while the Howlers were 6-of-7 (86 percent).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Searsport (3-8, 7.2222 points) is 13th, while Stearns of Millinocket (12-0, 72.4074 points) is first in the 20-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.
