Police seeking fatal crash witnesses

Belfast — A crash described as "major" has Belfast Police seeking help from the public. Few details have been released but in a Facebook post, Sgt. Dan Fitzpatrick said the accident took place on Route 3 just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The post was later updated to state one person, a 26-year-old woman, died and several others were seriously injured.

The crash happened approximately 400 yards from the Belfast/Belmont town line, according to police, and involved two small pickup trucks. One vehicle was heading out of Belfast while the other vehicle was inbound when the crash occurred. Four people were injured in the crash.

A 26-year-old female passenger in one of the vehicles was found deceased at the scene, police say. A female passenger in the second vehicle was taken by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center with internal injuries and two males were transported to Waldo County General Hospital with injuries, according to police.

Route 3 was down to one lane for several hours while Maine State Police worked to reconstruct the accident. Assistance was provided by Belfast Fire and Ambulance crews, along with personnel from Waldo County Sheriff’s Department, state police and Totman’s Towing.

This crash remained under investigation by Belfast Police Department and more information will become available later, police said Saturday afternoon.

Police are asking any witnesses to the crash to call the department at 338-2420.

No additional details are available at this time.
