Dan Harriman trims posts for a section of railing on the Passy Rail Trail in Belfast May 3. The city has closed the trail for several weeks to put finishing touches in place, including a stone dust surface and 2,200 feet of railing along some of the steeper shoulders of the former rail bed.

Harriman, a foreman with Carmel-based fencing contractor C.A. Newcomb & Sons, said he's built fences for bike paths in Brunswick, Ellsworth, Augusta and Lewiston. This was his first rail trail railing, and a notable one for being made of wood.

"We usually do it out of chain link," he said.
