Pottery workshop offered at Waterfall Arts

Jan 31, 2020
Pottery by Jody Johnstone of Swanville.

Belfast — Jody Johnstone will be teaching a two-day pottery workshop at Waterfall Arts, 256 High St., on Saturday, Feb. 29, and Sunday, March 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The workshop will be a combination demonstration and hands on. Techniques to be covered include cutting and adding, adding with coils, faceting, rib shaping, sculpting and more. Participants should have some experience with clay and be able to throw basic forms to alter.

Johnstone has been a full time woodfiring potter in Swanville for 23 years. She apprenticed with National Living Treasure Jun Isezaki in Bizen, Japan from 1994 to 1995 and completed construction of a 24-ft.-long anagama tunnel kiln in 1997. For Johnstone, the anagama kiln calls for strong forms over applied decoration, and over the years she has been interested in and honed the altered forms and techniques that she will share.
