Question of the week: What is a Homestead Exemption and who qualifies? A homestead Exemption is a program that gives a certain amount off the value of your residence, which in turn lowers your principal balance due for taxes. The qualification is simple you have to have owned the property for at least 12 months and have made it your permanent place of residence. This means you occupy this residence, it is a true fixed and permanent home and principal establishment. You can only have one permanent residence that can qualify for a homestead exemption.  For more information and a homestead application form visit the Town Office.
