Belfast — Ideal early-morning conditions greeted the more than 110 runners/walkers and canine companions as winner Roger Quehl IV took advantage with a blistering winning pace during the fifth annual "Kilted Canter" 5-kilometer road race.

The 3.1-mile event on Saturday, July 15 started and finished near Belfast Area High School and saw Quehl, 19, of Searsport finish the couse in 16 minutes and 12 seconds, nearly a minute ahead of runner-up Shawn Rumery, 31, of Searsmont, who ended in a strong 17:01.

Katie Buckley, 38, of Searsmont was the first female finisher as she crossed the relatively flat, fast course in 22:13. She was 17th overall among 112 finishers.

The Belfast Rotary-hosted event, part of the weekend's Celtic Celebration, often is referred to as "where the pleats meet the street." That is because many in the field participate wearing kilts.

Quehl's time this year was a course record for the five years the Rotary has sponsored the event, but history from when the run was sponsored by the Maine Celtic Celebration was unavailable.

Quehl, a standout Lion student-athlete before his graduation from Belfast Area High School, has been the first overall finisher in the "Kilted Canter" 5K four straight years — 2014-17.

In fact, Quehl's previous best winning time on the course was 17:26, which he blitzed this summer. In fact, he finished at 17:26 the previous two years and 18:58 in 2014.

Douglas Wich was winner in 2013 at 19:26.

The Rotary Club also will host the eighth annual "Bug Run" 5K run/walk, a Harbor Fest tradition, on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 8:30 a.m.

The scenic, fairly flat course includes a few gentle hills, shaded neighborhoods, a stretch along the water front and the Armistice Foot Bridge across the Passagassawaukeag River.

The prizes for the top female and male runners is unique and includes 20 pounds of live lobsters (“bugs”). There is a pancake breakfast, compliments of Harbor Fest, to follow.

Race-day registration and packet pick-up is 7:30 to 8:15 a.m.

The entry fee is $20 through Aug. 16; $25 on race day; $20 for active duty military; registration includes blueberry pancake breakfast; performance t-shirts are guaranteed for all runners who register by Friday, Aug. 4; after that date, t-shirts are available while supplies last.
