Quick start: Belfast boys, girls soccer split with Warriors

By Staff | Sep 04, 2012

The Belfast boys and girls soccer squads hoped to start the season off on the right foot as the Lions opened their respective 2012 campaigns against Nokomis of Newport.

Home proved not to be sweet for both squads hosting those contests, as the Lion girls fell 4-1 at Belfast Sept. 1 and the Lion boys picked up a 2-0 win at Newport Aug 31.

In the boys game at Newport, the Lions booted home a pair of goals in the second half and prevailed in their first game of the campaign. Tyler Baker and Yanni Rakis scored goals for Belfast.

After a scoreless 40 minutes, the Lions got on the board when Marcus Riley found teammate Jake Levangie on a throw-in, who passed to Baker, who, in turn, beat the Warrior keeper with about 25 minutes remaining in regulation.

The visitors then got a crucial insurance goal with about 15 minutes remaining as Baker was pushed down in the box, which resulted in a penalty kick, which Rakis buried, to give the Lions the cushion they needed.

Tremelle Groene minded the net for Belfast.

In the girls game at Belfast, Kelsie Richards had a hat trick for the Warriors, while Sierra Fortin tallied the team's fourth goal. Alexis Racioppi also creased the net for Belfast.

Breann Cummings made 15 saves in goal for the Lions and Becky Orcutt five for the Warriors. Nokomis outshot Belfast 20-11 and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
