Rockport — The Camden Hills Regional High School cross-country team will host its annual "Race for the Crockett Trail” 5-kilometer event on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the school, located at 25 Keelson Dr.

It is a family and walker-friendly race.

The race will begin at 11 a.m., as registration starts at 9 a.m. The cost is $15 per person and $10 for students, but donations beyond that are appreciated.

Proceeds will go to the upkeep of the Crockett Trail at Camden Hills. There will be prizes for the top finishers in each age group and a prize drawing for other finishers.

The Crockett Trail is a multi-purpose trail named after Penny and Charlie Crockett, who served the high school as teachers, coaches and mentors for a combined 69 years. The trail serves as the home course for the Camden Hills Regional High School’s cross-country running and Nordic ski teams.

The high school cross-country teams will host their homecoming meet on the trail on Friday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. The Camden-Rockport Middle School cross-country teams also hold their regular-season meets on the course. The next Schooner meet on the trail will be Wednesday, Oct. 10.

The Crockett Trail is open year-round to the public as a mile-long nature trail with interpretive signage for 25 different native plant species. In the winter, the trail also serves as a public Nordic ski trail.

Completed in the fall of 2017, the trail was constructed by dozens of volunteers and made possible through grants from First National Bank and James O’Rourke, as well as in-kind services from local businesses, including Gartley & Dorsky Engineering & Surveying, Bragg’s Tree Care, Viking Lumber, Dorr Wood Carving & Sign Company and landscapers David Wellman and Dan Eaton.
