Radio blues for festival weekend

May 06, 2020
The North Atlantic Blues Festival in 2019.

Rockland — The longstanding collaboration of the North Atlantic Blues Festival and Maine’s Kiss FM radio stations will ensure that blues will be on, if not in, the air during what would have been this summer’s festival weekend.

Although the NABF has been postponed, lineup intact, until 2021, Maine Kiss FM radio stations will broadcast music by the scheduled performers beginning 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12.

Saturday will feature music by Blues Caravan artists Jeremiah Johnson, Whitney Shay and Ryan Perry; Gumbo Grits and Gravy’s Marcella Simien, Annie Harris and Guy Davis; Tennessee Redemption featuring Jeff Jensen and Brandon Sandini; Jason Ricci; and the Johnny Rawls Revue featuring Dave Keller and Lady D.

Sunday’s broadcast will feature music by Thornetta Davis, Tullie Brae, Ana Popovic, Coco Montoya and Ronnie Baker Brooks. Montoya and Brooks had planned on joining forces for a tribute to Albert Collins, so music by that late great artist also will be featured. Interspersed throughout will be tunes by inter-act performer RB Stone, as well as interviews with some of the 2021 festival artists.

NABF co-founder and –producer Paul Benjamin announced the radio weekend on Facebook a day after the virtual Blues Music Awards presentations on May 3 (he usually attends the Memphis event). Most of this year’s winners have played the Maine festival, with young Christone “Kingfish” Ingram (who opened the NABF shortly after graduating high school in 2017) taking multiple BMAs. Video of this year’s awards show may be seen on Facebook and YouTube.
