Responsibility -  Adam Kohlstrom

Luke 19:11-27

19:11-12. How does this parable answer those who supposed the kingdom was about to appear immediately?

19:13. What should we do while we await the return of the King and the consummation of the Kingdom? For what purpose has the master entrusted his property to his servants? Read these passages and list the purposes for which God has entrusted His “property” and “gifts” to us: Genesis 1:28; 2:15;

Romans 12:6-8; 1Corinthians 12:7; 2Corinthians 5:18-20; 1Peter 4:10-11.

19:16-19. What is the mark of a “good servant”? How might we recognize a “good servant” today?

19:20-21. Why is returning undiminished what the master has entrusted insufficient? This servant’s concern is clearly his own security and not his master’s service. How might you and I be guilty of the same thing today?

19:20-21. What excuses have you heard people give for not using what they have been entrusted to engage in the master’s business?

19:20-21. Based on his actions in vv.13-19, does the master appear to be a “severe man”? How would you describe this servant’s relationship with his master? How does one’s relationship to God affect one’s service for God?

19:24-26. What point is Jesus making in the taking of the one mina and giving it to the one who has ten minas? Do you think the slogan: “Use it or lose it” is an apt restatement of this principle? How about: “With great power comes great responsibility”?  Does the thought of being entrusted great gifts excite or scare you? Why?

19:14,27. How does the king’s punishment of the rebellious citizens fit with their own desire for him not to rule over them? How does this part of the parable answer those who might claim they are not responsible to God?
