Searsport — After the hosts outscored Sumner of Sullivan 18-4 in the first quarter of their Friday night, Feb. 19 contest, the question for the Searsport girls basketball team became not if Makenzie Alley would eclipse 1,000 career points — but when?

With Alley scoring 10 of those points in the game’s first eight minutes — and the contest otherwise in hand — the steady senior kept up the scoring onslaught to the tune of a 27-point performance, which gave the Vikings a 52-28 win.

Now with 1,003 career points, Alley became the 10th Viking to amass more than 1,000 points and the sixth female player, the most recent Barrett Grant in 2017.

Alley needed 24 points before the game to reach the 1,000-point mark.

The Vikings (5-4) led 18-4, 29-12 and 41-22 at the quarter breaks, with Alley’s significant accomplishment coming off a fast break — off an outlet from teammate Kyla Perkins — with 2:51 to play in the third.

The layup kissed off the glass and, moments later, the slender 5-foot 8-inch guard was was surrounded by teammates near midcourt as the game stopped for a brief ceremony.

“This girl has worked so hard,” said veteran Searsport coach Mel Grant to a small, assembled group near midcourt, along with members of Alley’s family. “Just an amazing, amazing kid.”

"Getting my 1,000th point makes me feel a lot of things," said Alley. "I felt very emotional because I didn’t think I was going to be able to get it due to our shortened season. I also felt very accomplished because scoring 1,000 points has also been my number one high school goal."

Following her 10-point first quarter, Alley, a three-sport standout also in soccer and softball, added four in the second and eight more in the third before she wrapped her night up with a three-point stanza in the fourth.

“[She is] the most tenacious competitor,” said Grant. “A great teammate. Always helping out the younger girls. Hates to have the attention, but understands why it has happened. Four-year starter. I actually think we show what each other is going to do and say before we do. Like a daughter.”

Seven other Vikings got into the scoring column on Friday, including Perkins with points; Emily Mello, six; Abby Astbury, four; and Sarah Gent, Emma Spiegel, Laura Warman and Lily Nadeau, two.

Mia Richardson scored eight points for the Tigers, while Rachel Colby added seven; Belinda Catheron, four; Brianna Flaherty, three; and Makayla Bunker, Brooklyn Newenham and Clara Christiansen, two.

Sumner netted 5-of-9 foul shots (56 percent) and Searsport 3-of-10 (30 percent), as all 10 came from Alley.

Alley had 101 points following the team’s recent game with Deer Isle-Stonington before scoring 20 against Belfast, 32 in an exhibition game with Camden Hills and 25 against Bucksport 24 hours prior to breaking the milestone on Friday night.

Now, Alley will continue to make the most of her final few days in a Viking uniform.

"I can’t begin to sum up how much playing for Searsport has meant to me these last four years," she said. "I love my teammates and I love my coaches. I will always think of them as my second family, and I couldn’t have been able to score 1,000 points without them."

Searsport has two more regular-season games against Mount View of Thorndike and Deer Isle-Stonington before it will participate in the Class C/D Coastal Pod Championship.

Boys game

The Searsport boys also netted their second win in nine tries this season on Friday as the Vikings defeated the host Tigers 50-40.

Searsport (2-7) jumped to a 9-6 advantage after one quarter, led 27-16 at halftime and 43-28 after three quarters.

Josh Wright keyed the Vikings with 28 points, while Gabe Kneeland added 10; Chase Brassbridge, five; Tim Smith, three; and Elias Higgins and Cody Reynolds, two.

Jackson Bunker scored 12 points for the Tigers, while Emmett Mother added eight; Austin Britton and Nolan Christiansen, six; Billy Wray, five; Ethan Chase, two; and Connor Kelley, one.

Searsport finished 14-of-19 (74 percent) from the free throw line and Sumner 7-of-12 (58 percent).
