Road trip woes: Lions eliminated from postseason by pesky Wildcats

By Mark Haskell | Jun 02, 2014

Presque isle — The No. 12 Belfast girls tennis team knew full well it would have its hands full in the Eastern Class B preliminary playoff match against No. 5 Presque Isle.

Not only had the Wildcats lost only one match all season, but the nearly 400-mile round trip to “The County” and back is a far from desirable bus ride.

Both factors came into play on Monday, June 2 as the Lions (4-9) were dealt a 5-0 loss, which eliminated BAHS from the postseason.

The Wildcats (11-2) will play at No. 4 Ellsworth (10-2) in an upcoming quarterfinal match. The Eagles are the lone team to defeat the Wildcats this season as they bested Presque Isle 3-2 on May 13.

Belfast was the lowest seed entering the regional tournament.

The individual results from Monday's prelim, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Mariah Hurd lost to Sara Gilson, 2-6, 1-6; Ashley Keene lost to Hilary Boucher, 1-6, 0-6; and Amalia Kockerols lost to Blair Bailey, 1-6, 0-6.

In doubles, Mackenzie Moore and Catey McGinn lost to Michelle Cawley and Lora Ireland, 0-6, 1-6; and Lacey Durkee and Madison Pickering lost to Sarah Morneault and Sedona Lucas, 3-6, 1-6.
