Rockland nets court supremacy over Broad Cove Bucs in 5th-6th boys hoops

Eight teams battle through weekend in Rockland Harbor YMCA Invitational

Rockland — The annual Rockland Harbor YMCA Boys Invitational Basketball Tournament bounced in Friday through Sunday, March 2-4 at the Flanagan Community Center.

The eight-team, double-elimination tourney — for fifth- and sixth-graders — included seven squads from the Midcoast and one from the middle of the state.

The squads included Five Town Windjammers, Broad Cove Bucs, Rockland, Belfast Lions (White), Belfast Lions (Blue), Lisbon Greyhounds, Medomak Valley and R&D Thrashers.

When the final buzzer sounded early Sunday afternoon — after 14 games over three days of exciting court action — Rockland had finished unbeaten and defeated the Bucs 36-31 for the crown.

Interestingly, most of the players on Rockland and Broad Bay teams will play for Oceanside hoop squads in the future.

On Friday, Rockland beat Thrashers and Five Town bested Belfast Blue, while on Saturday, Broad Cove beat Belfast White, Medomak Valley downed Lisbon, Rockland beat Five Town, Broad Cove beat Medomak Valley, Thrashers defeated Belfast Blue, Lisbon bested Belfast White, Medomak Valley upended Thrashers and Five Town upended Lisbon.

On Sunday, Five Town downed Medomak Valley and Broad Cove bested Five Town, before Rockland and the Bucs battled in the finale.

The fifth- and sixth-grade girls will hold their tournament on Friday through Sunday, March 9-11 at the same venue.

The tournament team rosters, according to the event program, included:

Rockland — Connor Kingsbury, Carter Galley, Cohen Galley, Zeb Foster, Josh Elwell, Jacob Watkinson, Chase Monroe, Rachean Dotson and Zach Woodman. The coach is Dan Kingsbury.

Belfast White — Sam Duval, Jacob Lindelof, Gary Gale, J.D. Littlefield, Kamin Wetherington, Elias Higgins, Curtis Littlefield and Sam Field. The coaches are Chris Duval and Jess Lindelof.

Belfast Blue — Cole Clark, Ethan Abbott, Eli Veilleux, Cole Castro, Hagan Chase, Ben Allen, Ben Noonan, Chandler Patterson, Caden Nickerson and Hunter Knight. The coaches are Dean Clark and Tyler Prescott.

Medomak Valley — Vishal Mellor, Gavin White, Jack Martin, Kristian Shumann, Liam Belyea, Gabe Lash, Zan Nguyen, Landon Trask, Aaron Reed, Sam Moody and Geordan Moody. The coaches are Matt Lash, Neil Lash, Matt Moody and Scott White.

R&D Thrashers — Maddox Robishaw, Taygan McCallister, Dominick Vose, Michael McCue, Nathaniel Thompson, Connor Beal, Ethan Bicaj, Hunter Shook, Joey Bell, Parker Darge and Quinten Kruger. The coaches are Jared Porter and Ronnie Porter.

Five Town — Owen Reynolds, Karl Hokkanen, Ziam O'Dwyer, Ryan Glaser, Charlie Pons, Will Duke, Miles Murray, Quincy Messer, Alex Todd and Hayden Davis. The coaches are Jon Duke and Jared Todd.

Broad Cove Bucs — Landyn Benner, Dylan Benner, Ben Tripp, Larry Robbins, Logan Meklin, Kory Donlin, Kavie Maloney, Blane Poland, Kaden Melquist and Mathias McPhail. The coaches are Travis Doughty and Mike Benner.

Lisbon — Owen Booker, Caden Boone-McZenna, Jayden Camp, Aiden Golino, Ethan Hayes, Caleb King, Cody Osmond, Alonzo Phillips, DeSean Trufant and Ethan Zylla. The coaches are Ryan Booker, Jerry Zylla and Chris Camp.

The following is a recap of games played throughout the tournament:

Rockland 36, Broad Cove Bucs 31

At Rockland March 4, Rockland finished the tournament unbeaten and bested the Bucs to claim the title. The Bucs led 13-4 after the first quarter, while Rockland led 19-15 at halftime and 29-21 after three quarters.

Carter Galley scored 15 points for Rockland, while Cohen Galley added 10; Foster, six; Dotson, four; and Monroe, one.

Donlin led the Bucs with 11 points, while Robbins added seven; Tripp, six; Dylan Benner, five; and McPhail, two.

Rockland was 6-of-14 (43 percent) from the foul line, while the Bucs were 5-of-12 (42 percent).

Broad Cove Bucs 39, Five Town 33

At Rockland March 4, the Bucs punched their ticket to the championship round with a six-point win over Five Town. The Bucs led 10-6, 21-13 and 32-25 at the quarter breaks.

Donlin scored 10 points for the Bucs, while Landyn Benner and Dylan Benner added seven; Robbins, six; Tripp, four; Melquist, three; and Poland, two.

Duke led Five Town with 10 points, while Reynolds netted nine; Pons, six; Davis, four; and Todd and Glaser, two.

The Bucs were 4-of-9 (44 percent) from the foul line, while Five Town was 7-of-15 (47 percent).

Five Town 49, Medomak Valley 24

At Rockland March 4, Five Town netted a lopsided win over Medomak Valley. Five Town led 12-4, 25-8 and 37-18 at the quarter breaks.

Reynolds scored 15 points for the winners, while Duke added 14; Messer, eight; Davis, six; and Glaser, Murray and Todd, two.

Reed scored nine points for Medomak Valley, while Nguyen added five; Shumann, four; and Mellor, Lash and Geordan Moody, two.

Five Town was 4-of-8 (50 percent) from the foul line, while Medomak Valley was 2-of-6 (33 percent).

Rockland 38, Broad Cove Bucs 29

At Rockland March 4, Rockland advanced to the final with a triumph over the Bucs. The Bucs led 10-8 after the first quarter, while Rockland led 24-14 at halftime and 33-20 after three quarters.

Cohen Galley led Rockland with 18 points, while Foster added six; Dotson, five; Kingsbury, Carter Galley and Watkinson, two; and Monroe, one.

Robbins led the Bucs with 12 points, while Dylan Benner added five; Landyn Benner and Meklin, three; and Tripp, Donlin and McPhail, two.

Rockland was 8-of-15 (53 percent) from the foul line, while the Bucs were 3-of-9 (33 percent).

Medomak Valley 47, R&D Thrashers 37

At Rockland March 3, Medomak Valley netted a 10-point win over the Thrashers. The Thrashers led 8-5 after the first quarter, while Medomak Valley led 21-13 at halftime and 28-25 after three quarters.

Shumann led Medomak Valley with 14 points, while Nguyen added 12; Mellor, 10; Martin, four; White, Reed and Geordan Moody, two; and Trask, one.

Beal scored 11 points for the Thrashers, McAllister added six; Robishaw and Thompson, five; Darge and Kruger, four; and Bell, two.

Medomak Valley was 17-of-31 (55 percent) from the foul line, while the Thrashers were 6-of-16 (37 percent).

Five Town 42, Lisbon Greyhounds 24

At Rockland March 3, Five Town remained alive with an 18-point win over the Greyhounds. Five Town led 8-2, 22-12 and 34-20 at the quarter breaks.

Duke led Five Town with 15 points, while Pons added seven; Messer and Glaser, six; Todd, five; Reynolds, two; and O’Dwyer and Murray, one.

Booker scored 10 points for Lisbon, while Boone-McZenna and Hayes added six and Phillips two.

Five Town was 5-of-17 (29 percent) from the foul line, while Lisbon was 0-of-4.

Broad Cove Bucs 33, Medomak Valley 31

At Rockland March 3, the Bucs held on to best Medomak Valley. The Bucs led 6-5 after the first quarter, while Medomak led 14-13 at halftime. The Bucs then retook a 23-21 lead after three quarters.

Landyn Benner and Donlin each scored 11 points for the Bucs, while Dylan Benner added six; Robbins, three; and Melquist, two.

Mellor scored 10 points for Medomak Valley, while Reed added nine; Lash, five; Shumann, four; and Belyea, two.

The Bucs were 4-of-8 (50 percent) from the charity stripe, while Medomak Valley was 10-of-22 (45 percent).

Lisbon 33, Belfast White 32 (OT)

At Rockland March 3, Lisbon edged out Belfast in overtime. The two squads were tied 4-4 after the first quarter, while Belfast led 19-11 at halftime and 25-21 after three quarters before Lisbon rallied to knot the score 29-29 at the end of regulation.

Hayes led Lisbon with 14 points, while Boone-McZenna added nine; Camp and Phillips, four; and Zylla, two.

Littlefield led Belfast with 22 points, while Lindelof added eight and Gale two.

Lisbon was 3-of-15 (20 percent) from the foul line, while Belfast was 4-of-15 (27 percent).

Rockland 48, Five Town 30

At Rockland March 3, the host squad continued its winning ways with a victory over Five Town. Rockland led 11-6, 15-11 and 34-14 at the quarter breaks.

Cohen Galley led Rockland with 14 points, while Foster tallied 12; Carter Galley, 10; Watkinson and Dotson, four; Monroe, three; and Kingsbury, two.

Messer paced Five Town with 10 points, while Duke added nine; Glaser, four; O’Dwyer, three; and Reynolds and Pons, two.

Five Town was 3-of-6 (50 percent) from the foul line, while Rockland was 4-of-6 (67 percent).

R&D Thrashers 51, Belfast Blue 24

At Rockland March 3, the Thrashers prevailed over Belfast Blue. The Thrashers led 13-2, 29-5 and 43-16 at the quarter breaks.

Thompson scored 11 points for the Thrashers, while Shook netted nine; Kruger, Beal and McCue, six; Bell and Darge, four; McAllister, three; and Robishaw, two.

Chase led Belfast Blue with 10 points, while Veilleux added nine; Abbott, three; and Allen, two.

Belfast Blue was 8-of-24 (33 percent) from the foul line, while the Thrashers were 4-of-16 (25 percent).

Medomak Valley 38, Lisbon Greyhounds 15

At Rockland March 3, Medomak Valley netted a lopsided win over the Greyhounds. Medomak Valley led 14-2, 22-11 and 29-11 at the quarter breaks.

Nguyen paced Medomak Valley with 10 points, while Reed netted nine; Shumann, six; Mellor, four; Trask, three; and Belyea, Lash and Moody, two.

Boone-McZenna led Lisbon with six points, while Hayes and Phillips added four and Booker one.

Medomak Valley was 4-of-11 (36 percent) from the foul line, while Lisbon was 1-of-12 (8 percent).

Broad Cove Bucs 42, Belfast Lions 24

At Rockland March 3, the Bucs blasted past the Lions. The Broad Cove Bucs led 7-4, 23-9 and 33-16 at the quarter breaks.

Landon Benner scored 13 points for the Bucs, while Meklin added eight; Tripp, six; Donlin, five; Robbins, four; and Maloney, Polard and Melquist, two.

Higgins scored eight points for the Lions, while Littlefield added seven; Wetherington, four; Gale and Littlefield, two; and Duval, one.

The Bucs were 1-of-4 (25 percent) from the foul line, while the Lions were 2-of-10 (20 percent).

Rockland 50, R&D Thrashers 17

At Rockland March 2, Rockland made quick work of the Thrashers. Rockland led 10-2, 19-7 and 36-12 at the quarter breaks.

Cohen Galley led Rockland with 15 points, while Kingsbury added 13; Foster, nine; Carter Galley, six; and Woodman, five.

Thompson scored nine points for the Thrashers, while Beal added four; Vose, two; and Bell and Kruger, one.

Rockland was 7-of-15 (47 percent) from the foul line, while the Thrashers were 3-of-14 (21 percent).

Five Town 32, Belfast Lions 10

At Rockland March 2, Five Town held the Lions scoreless in the first half and surged to victory. Five Town led 9-0, 11-0 and 24-2 at the quarter breaks.

O’Dwyer and Duke led Five Town with eight points each, while Messer added four; Reynolds and Pons, three; and Glaser, Todd and Davis, two.

Veilleux scored six points for the Lions, while Clark and Patterson added two.

Five Town was 2-of-9 (22 percent) from the foul line, while the Lions were 0-of-4.
