The month of July was designated to the Restorative Justice Project.  I will admit that I knew nothing about this organization when Bob Jackson approached me last year about becoming a recipient of our program. Since I like to know a bit about who you are and what you do when giving you some of our hard earned money at the end of the month, I will say I was pleasantly surprised!

Founded in 2005, the mission of the Restorative Justice Project of Midcoast Maine is to promote fundamental change in the justice system and schools. Instead of punishment, RJP promotes accountability and healing in the educational, criminal, and juvenile justice systems. In this approach, outcomes are measured by how much repair is done rather than by how much punishment is meted out.   Its responses to crime and wrongdoing seek renewal and safety for the community, support and healing for victims, and accountability and reintegration of the offender into the community.

Giving youth an opportunity to become empowered by adults who invite them into a circle of dialogue can transform relationships and perspectives for life, touching all participants—from individual youths and students, to mentors, teachers, and community members—building the social capital that strengthens our communities and, ultimately, our society.
