Belfast — A two-car crash on Route 3 in Belfast Feb. 15 claimed the life of 38-year-old Billy Jo Sherman of Liberty and left the drivers of both vehicles with serious injuries, according to Belfast Police.

The crash occurred during an early afternoon snowstorm on a straight stretch of road near the Belfast Curling Club.

Shana Lee Harriman, 32, of Montville was driving west on the two-lane highway with Sherman in the passenger seat when her car fishtailed on the slush- and snow-covered road and slid into the oncoming lane, Belfast Police Sgt. John Gibbs said. Terri Curtis, 61, of Belmont was driving east and hit the passenger side of Harriman's car, Gibbs said.

Sherman was pronounced dead at the scene. Harriman and Curtis were taken by ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital with what Gibbs described as "serious injuries."

Belfast Fire Department, the JAWS team, two ambulances, Waldo County Sheriff's Office deputies and Belfast Police responded to the scene of the crash. Route 3 was closed in both directions for two hours while emergency personnel worked at the scene.
