Searsport — Students and faculty of Regional School Unit 3 honored veterans at a special assembly on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Searsport District Middle and High School gymnasium.

Students in the Jobs for Maine Graduates program kicked off the event by serving breakfast at the school's cafeteria with community donations from Hannaford Supermarket, Coastal Cafe and Bakery, Just Barb's and Dunkin' Donuts.

One of the highlights of the musical performances included a rousing, choreographed song by the kindergarten and grade 1 chorus singing "Oh, I love America" by Teresa Jennings.

Middle and High School Principal Marianne DeRaps said, "I feel this is really important," and noted that when she was in school, not enough was done to honor those who served.

"I am very proud to be principal here," she said, "where we do such a great job to honor our veterans."

Elementary School Principal Larry Clement closed the ceremony by saying this event, "gives our student body a chance to see what it means to serve with honor ... You are all the highest level of example."
