RSU 3 rolls out automated text guidance service

Jan 13, 2021

Thorndike — Regional School Unit 3, in partnership with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, is rolling out a new alert system called "Sara Alert."

In a Jan. 13 letter to parents, staff and families, district Superintendent Charles Brown outlined the process by which information will disseminated when a person has been exposed to the virus.

"If you are a staff or student who is identified as a close contact of a confirmed positive COVID-19 case at school, you will receive a phone call from the school with initial guidance on next steps, including quarantining and testing," he wrote.

"Once you have received notification from the school, the Maine CDC’s Sara Alert system will begin sending you follow up guidance via text messages," Brown said. "Sara Alert is an automated system that uses daily text messages to help people who have been identified as close contacts monitor for symptoms after exposure.

"All students and staff will be enrolled in Sara Alert...," Brown said in the letter. "There is nothing required of you to be automatically enrolled in this service.

"If, however, you would like to opt out of Sara Alert, please contact the RSU 3 health office at 568-4606 by Jan. 19. If you do opt out of the Sara Alert system, and are later identified as a close contact to a positive case, you will receive follow up phone calls to confirm you have opted to not receive the automated text messages from Maine CDC."

Additional assistance is provided to people identified as close contacts of a COVID-19 positive person who need support during quarantine.
