Thorndike — In a letter prepared for parents and staff March 6, Dr. Paul Austin, superintendent of Regional School Unit 3, said the district "... will allow (students) to walk out and express their views in a safe and structured environment...."

Wednesday, March 14, has been designated as National School Walkout Day after the shootings at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Students will walk out for 17 minutes at 10 a.m. in honor of the 17 students and faculty who died in the school massacre and also to express their opinions on gun violence.

"It is important to give our students a voice on this national policy," Austin said. "RSU 3 is not endorsing any walkout or giving students consequences for doing so as long as they remain on school grounds, stay safe, and are respectful to others."
