Belfast — The Regional School Unit 71 board of directors on Nov. 27 approved a three-year contract for administrators.

The contract covers 10 employees of the Belfast-area school district, including principals and assistant principals. It does not cover the food service, transportation and technology directors. The contract takes effect in July 2018 and includes a salary increase of 2 percent in the first year then 1.5 percent per year in the second and third years, and leaves other benefits unchanged from the current contract.

Superintendent Paul Knowles said the board is likely to negotiate the district support staff contract later this year and the teacher contract next year.

In January 2018, the district will seek construction bids for ongoing renovations at Belfast Area High School, Knowles said. The work will include construction of a new math wing, locker rooms, stage, home economics room (used as a food lab and biology classroom) and administrative offices, which are being moved from their current location on Waldo Avenue into the high school building. Under the current schedule, Knowles said, work would begin in March.

The board is currently meeting with department heads to inform the drafting of next year's budget. Knowles said budget talks will begin in mid-January or February.
