Ruth Murphy

Ruth (Clemons) Murphy passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017, in Belfast at the age of 96. She was born Jan. 20, 1921, to Delia (Tripp) and Oscar Clemons. Her parents died three weeks apart in 1927 leaving Ruth and her seven young brothers to be separated to live with family and friends. Ruth was raised in Hiram.

She graduated from Fryeburg Academy and Northeast Business College in Portland. In 1942, she married Bernard Murphy of Sanford. He was drafted into the Army Air Corps during WWII and was stationed in Dayton, Ohio. Ruth followed and worked as a civilian secretary on the army base.

After the war, they returned to Maine, settling in Springvale. Here, they raised their two daughters, Eileen and Pat. When they were in school, she worked as an administrative assistant to the Nasson College librarian for twenty years. After that, she held a similar position with the Southern Maine Regional Planning Commission until her retirement in 1988.

Upon the death of her husband in 1991, she moved to Belfast to be closer to a daughter. While here, she volunteered many hours to Waldo County Triad. She recently received recognition for her continuous service in the production of their newsletter.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband, parents, six brothers and a son-in-law. Her brothers were Ray Clemons of Yarmouth, Bill Clemons of Brunswick, Bob Clemons of California, John Clemons of Sanford, David (Clemons) Higgins of New Hampshire and Leroy Clemons of Bar Harbor. Her son-in-law was Clayton “Bud” Hand of Belfast.

She is survived by her daughters Eileen Murphy of Bluffton, S.C., and Pat Pierson and son-in-law Harlan Pierson of Knox. She is also survived by one brother, George (Clemons) Croston of Brunswick as well as many nieces and nephews.
