SDHS senior receives Principal's Award

May 11, 2020
Haley Braga has won the Maine Principal's Award at Searsport District High School.

Searsport — Haley Braga of Stockton Springs, a senior at Searsport District High School, has been selected to receive the 2020 Principal's Award, Principal Marianne DeRaps announced Monday. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals' Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior's academic achievement and citizenship.

"Throughout her four years of high school, Haley has shown herself to be a very mature, amazing young lady," DeRaps said in a news release. "Haley is at the top of her class academically. She is a leader in civic mindedness, academics, and service. For these reasons, she is my choice for this year's Maine Principal's Award."

DeRaps praised Braga for her ability to plan and organize groups of people and events. "She has been a Girl Scout for many years and is a Leader of Girl Scouts now," DeRaps said. "She has organized trips, meetings, and many projects for Girl Scouts. Haley’s experiences have honed these attributes. I have seen this skill set in the Student Council and at our recent National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Haley is so mature that you have to remind yourself that she is not an adult."

The SDHS principal said Braga is a natural leader who leads by example. "In Student Council, she often thinks beyond herself to those that do not have the same support and systems in place," DeRaps said. "This sensitivity to others is well received by her peers and strengthens her communication as many see things in a perspective they had not previously."

The Principal's Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the Maine Principals Association, the professional organization that represents Maine's school administrators.

Normally, each MPA award winner at every high school in Maine is honored at an annual Honors Luncheon, but this year’s event has been canceled.
