Town Office

There are a couple of recycling opportunities that the Town Office would like to share with residents:

The first, sponsored by Belfast Rotary, takes place on Saturday, September 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Belfast Public Works Department parking lot where they will be collecting electronic waste (computers, TVs, small appliances, etc.) for disposal, personal documents for shredding, and disposal of unwanted medications.  The shredding service is available to personal users only (no commercial/business documents), and is limited to 5 (2’ x 1’ x 1’) file boxes per person.   Staples, paper clips, and small binder clips do not need to be removed.  All shredding will be done on site.  Visit www.belfastrotary.org or call Doug Smith at 338-3704 for details or questions.

The second event is the Maine Obsolete Pesticide Collection Program, sponsored by the Maine Board of Pesticides Control and the DEP.   The collection of old, unusable pesticides at sites in Bangor and Augusta will take place in October, but registration by September 30th is required.  For more information, visit www.thinkfirstspraylast.org or call 287-2731.

Rabies clinics, sponsored by the Waldo County Humane Society, are also happening during the next few months.  These clinics are free to Waldo County residents, though donations are gratefully accepted.  The cost is $7 per shot for anyone from outside of Waldo County.  You must bring proof of the previous rabies vaccination to get a three-year certificate.  The next scheduled clinic is October 7th from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the Brooks Fire Station.  Dogs must be on a leash and under the owners control at all times; cats must be in secure carriers.

Art Opening at the Searsmont Town Library

The Searsmont Town Library will hold an art opening for Rockland artist Carol Sloane on Thursday, September 21st from 5 to 6 p.m.  The show displays both colorful still lifes and portraits that Sloane painted in the 1990's during her time in New York City at the Art Students League.  All are welcome to come and view the art and meet the artist in our library setting.
