Town Office

The next and final Demo Debris Day for this year at the Searsmont Transfer Station is Saturday, August 18th, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It’s that time again - tax bills have been sent.  We wanted to make sure they didn’t get overlooked, so this year they are lilac.  Like Santa, we made our list and checked it twice to make sure nobody got left out.  If you don’t get your tax bill in the next week, please contact the Town Office for a replacement.  Courtesy copies have been sent to any escrow holders that we are aware of (you have to tell us if you have an escrow, as not all mortgages do).  It is ultimately the responsibility of the homeowner to make sure that their escrow company has a copy of the bill, if needed.  This will be the last year we are providing this service, as the frequent changes in mortgage accounts make it too time consuming to continue, and many mortgage holders now use tax service accounts.  As always, we encourage taxpayers with escrow accounts to check with their escrow company to ensure they have the information needed to pay the tax bill on time, and to check with the Town Office in late September to make sure payment has been made.  The commitment book will soon be available on the Searsmont website.

The tax rate remains the same this year, a mil rate of 20.5.  Please contact the Town Office if you have any questions.  Any assessment questions should be addressed to the Assessor’s Agent, Jim Murphy.  His next day in the office is August 14th from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A reminder for Tax Club members:  Payments must be made on time or removal from the Tax Club could occur.

There was a recently confirmed case of a rabid raccoon, and there were two more suspected cases (animals are not tested unless they bite a person or pet).  Both of those animals are now deceased, but it would be prudent for all residents to be watchful of themselves, children, and pets when outdoors and avoid contact with bats, skunks, raccoons, and fox.
