Town Office

There will be a special town meeting on Tuesday, July 23, at 7 p.m. in the Searsmont Community Building meeting room to act on an article to authorize the selectmen to use additional funds from the fund balance to enhance the road budget and perform site work at the fire station to resolve some water drainage issues.

A public meeting will follow the special town meeting to review the changes at the transfer station with interested residents, and respond to questions and concerns about those changes.

The Searsmont Tax Commitment will be completed soon. Bills will be mailed in late July. If you do not receive yours within a few weeks, please contact the Town Office at 342-5411. The Town Office sends courtesy copies of the tax bills to escrow holders, but it is the responsibility of the homeowner to provide the name and address of the escrow company if you would like a copy sent.

The next and final Demo Debris Day for this year at the Searsmont Transfer Station is Saturday, Aug. 17, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Searsmont Town Library Book and Bake Sale coming up soon

Mark your calendars for the Searsmont Town Library’s 30th annual Book & Bake Sale, coming up on Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Community Building on the corner of Routes 173 and 131. In addition to over 2,000 books and delicious homemade bake sale items, there will be a silent auction, “Grandma’s Attic” yard sale, and live music.

Though the library is no longer accepting book donations for this year’s sale, contributions are welcome for the yard sale. Clothing, furniture, and electronics (like computers, stereo systems, etc.) are not accepted, but small appliances are accepted.

Donations to the “Grandma’s Attic” yard sale will be accepted at the lower level of the Community Building on Monday, July 15, from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7 p.m.; Tuesday, July 16, from 5 to 7 p.m.; Thursday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7 p.m.; Friday, July 19, from 1 to 3 p.m.; or by appointment — call Geri at 342-5030.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s a fun annual event that the community really looks forward to,” said Jana Herbener, chairman of the library’s board of trustees. “In addition to the work of the library board and the Friends of the Searsmont Town Library, around 50 volunteers help set out the books, run the event, bake cakes, pies and cookies, donate yard sale treasures, collect auction items, and of course when it’s all over, put everything away!”

The library generally raises about $7,000 in one morning, and the money allows the library to buy new books. It is the library’s only major fundraising event each year.

For more information about the about this year’s Book and Bake Sale, or to volunteer or offer an item for the silent auction, call the library at 342-5549, or go to searsmont.com.
