Light lunch at the library

The Searsmont Historical Society and the Searsmont Town Library are teaming up to offer light lunch for seniors at the library on the last Friday of each month.

The first luncheon will be on Friday, Jan. 25, at 12:15 p.m. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the luncheon will be held the next day, Saturday the 26th, at the same time.

We’ll be serving something warm from the slow cooker (soup or stew) along with sandwiches, biscuits, fruit and cookies. Lunch will be served in the upstairs lobby of the Searsmont Community Center, and coffee will be served in the library following lunch with music, games, puzzles and good conversation.

The event is free, and all are welcome to attend.

Please RSVP to me by calling 342-2538, and leave a message so that we have an idea of how many people plan to attend. Also, if you need transportation to and from the library, let us know and we will do our best to arrange transport.

This seems like a pleasant way to spend a winter afternoon. Hope to see you there.

The Book Group will meet on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m. to discuss "Fever" (and perhaps perform an impromptu Peggy Lee sing-a-long!).

LEGO Building Club meets at 3 p.m. on Fridays to delve into their creative minds. The music listening this week is Camel's Music inspired by "The Snow Goose" from 1975.

Jan. 31 is the last day to register dogs for 2019 and avoid the $25 late fee. There are still 116 unlicensed dogs. We’ve been reminding dog owners for months. We’re tired of it. Get it done. Unaltered dogs are $11 to register. Altered dogs are $6. Proof of current rabies vaccination is required.

Jan. 31 is also the end of the town’s fiscal year, and all unpaid taxes as of that date will be printed in the Town Report. Check with the Town Office if you need more information on your account or balance.

Yet another group is seeking official party status — the Alliance Party. As with the Libertarian and Socialist parties, they must enroll 5,000 members by January 2020 to achieve official recognition, and have at least 10,000 enrolled voters who participate in the following general election. If you wish to enroll or re-enroll with any if these parties, visit the Town Office and complete a new voter registration card.

The Town Office will be closed on Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Did you know that plastic bags contaminate the recycled waste stream? There were many ads and news reports from Ecomaine in December highlighting recycling issues. Too much contaminated recycling has led to a deteriorating market for recyclables.

Plastic bags are not recyclable, and if you use them to put your recyclables in, tie it, and dump it, it is more likely to be pulled out and thrown away with the trash at the processing center, so what is the point of recycling then? If you must use plastic bags to store your recycling, empty it into the single stream bin and reuse the bags.

For those who have signed up for email reminders for motor vehicle registration, make sure you add the Town Office email, townofsearsmont@fairpoint.net, to your address list in your email program to ensure the messages go to your inbox and not to junk mail.
