Searsport has young group, but solid skills

Searsport — The following is a synopsis of the 2017 Searsport District High School boys soccer team:

Coach/years coached current team: John Frye, 10th year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 9-5, ninth in Class D South. The Vikings defeated No. 8 A.R. Gould of  South Portland 6-4 in a prelim playoff and fell to No. 1 Richmond 4-1 in the quarterfinals.

Roster: Seniors Daniel Mckeon (halfback), Ben Powell (goalie), David Estes (wing), Connor Kneeland (striker) and Liam MacMillan (striker); juniors Charlie Spiegel (halfback), Josh Golder (halfback), Michael Stanhope (fullback), George Dakin (fullback, goalie), Shawn Dakin (striker), Aaron Willey (halfback), Keon Tupper (fullback) and Jason Frazee (striker); sophomore Gabe Poulin (fullback), Colby Snow (fullback), Daegan Moody (fullback) and Kevin Bell (fullback); and freshmen Gabe Kneeland (halfback), Kevin Moreau (fullback) and Isaias Therio (halfback).

Known graduation losses: Barrett Grant and Lucas Hendrickson.

Significant impact athletes: Powell, MacMillan, Spiegel and Golder.

Team strengths: Hard work, teamwork and team speed.

Team goal: To qualify for the Class D South playoffs.

Top league opponents: Richmond, Greenville and North Yarmouth Academy.

Outlook: The Vikings undoubtedly lost a key member of their team to graduation in Grant, a top goal scorer and finalist for the Courier Publications/VillageSoup schoolboy athlete-of-the-year award.

However, coach Frye said his team is not short on talent and “we look to just keep getting better every day and hope that puts us into the playoffs, where anything can happen.”
