Searsport small in numbers, big in talent

Searsport — The following is a synopsis of the 2014 Searsport District High School track-and-field team:

Coach/years coached current team: Mike Vasiliauskas, 26th year.

Last year's record/playoff information: The Viking girls finished tied for 22nd (6 points) at the state Class C championships and 13th (10 points) at the Penobscot Valley Conference Class C small school championships. The Viking boys finished 13th (10 points) at the PVC Class C small school championships and did not score as a team for the state Class C championships.

Roster: Seniors Ida Eriksson (most events), Alicen Brooks (javelin) and Matt Kilpatrick (javelin, discus); juniors Alyssa Burkard (javelin, discus), Alivia Cross (javelin, hurdles), Jay Burkard (100 meters, 300-meter hurdles) and Jacob Powell (800 meters, 1,600 meters); sophomore Logan Staples (javelin, discus, long jump); and freshmen Paige Ireland (100 meters, 300-meter hurdles), Cassie Donald (1,600 and 3,200 meters) and Madison Philbrick (hurdles, javelin).

Known graduation losses: Jacob Butman, Austin Bean, Chas Evans and Darren Harriman.

Significant impact players: Ireland, Eriksson, Burkard, Brooks, Kilpatrick and Powell.

Team strength: Throwing events.

Team goals: To have all participants reach their full potential.

Top league opponents: Orono and John Bapst of Bangor.

Outlook: The Vikings hope to remain competitive in Class C this season and to qualify as many athletes as possible for conference and state championship events. Brooks and Powell both qualified for the state championships as individuals last year.
