Searsport — Searsport Elementary students will compete for gold in the WinterKids Winter Games, starting Tuesday, Jan. 9.

WinterKids is a nonprofit organization that helps children develop healthy lifelong habits through education and enjoyable outdoor winter activity. One elementary school was selected for each county in Maine to compete in a four-week physical activity and nutrition challenge that will conclude Friday, Jan. 26. Searsport Elementary was chosen to represent Waldo County.

Opening ceremonies Jan. 8 included marching, flag waving, torch lighting and appreciation to program sponsors, along with many smiles by participants. Senate President Michael Thibodeau, R-Waldo, was among the special guests, giving encouragement to students and lighting the commencement torch. A school-wide "freeze dance" activity followed.

In coming weeks, camp counselors from Camp Kieve will be hosting physical activities at the school in half-hour segments, with points for students completing challenges in physical activity, nutrition and family involvement, and culminating with a winter carnival at the school.

Schools can accrue additional points for school spirit, engagement with WinterKids, creativity, school-wide participation, opening and closing ceremonies, and collaborating with healthy eating and active living organizations in their community. Prizes include $5,000 for gold, $3,000 for silver and $1,500 for bronze.
