Second Congregational Church Warren Celebrates 192!

On Sunday, February 23rd, the Second Congregational Church of Warren will celebrate 192 years of coming together to worship in faith, freedom and fellowship.  All are invited to attend our celebration beginning with our Sunday service at 10 AM.  Cake and coffee will be served immediately after.

A brief history of SCCW:  On February 27, 1828, 13 men and 10 women organized the Second Congregational Parish.  Our present church building was begun in 1831 and dedicated on January 16, 1833.  Our original steeple was added in 1855, but destroyed in the Gale of 1869, with a new steeple built the following year.   The Chapel was dedicated in 1878 and rededicated in 1887 when it was connected to the church.  500 people were in attendance for this special service.

Since the 1800's our church has undergone many changes.  In 1955 a basement was dug to provide a fellowship room and kitchenette and in 2001 a Sunday School wing was added.  Our steeple was restored in 2017 with the help of a grant from the Maine Steeples Project and landscaping and handicapped ramps have been installed.  The work continues with a reclaimed green space where our parsonage stood only a few weeks ago.

What we do:  We have an active Mission Board, who make yearly donations to such organizations as Habitat for Humanity, Area Interfaith Outreach, Knox County Homeless Coalition, Liberation Institute, and Rockland District Nursing, to name a few.  We sponsor 3 children to go to school in Mexico, Haiti and the Philippines.

The Ladies Circle and Caring and Sharing Sisters are 2 groups within our church, who raise funds for the church, but also for outreach.  Every year the Caring and Sharing Sisters put together the Spring Fling with local talent and donate the proceeds to a different local group.

The Bread for the Journey food pantry and the Children's Clothing Exchange, both housed in the Old Brick School Community Center, are two ministries shared by SCCW and Warren Baptist Church.  The 2 churches, within walking distance of one another, serve together every Thursday morning, as we are all called to do.

At SCCW we have a dedicated congregation working to make the community a better place to live and doing our best to care for those often forgotten.  Come join our church family some Sunday morning and see what you've been missing.  Perhaps on February 23 when we celebrate our 192nd birthday!
